The gown in this print bears the name of Callot Soeurs, the Paris fashion house run by three sisters that drew wide attention in the years before World War I for its lace, embroidery, and draped evening dresses. Callot's designs were widely copied by American dressmakers and reported in the fashion press, and the house was one of the leading names in French couture at the time. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by the Bain News Service in New York in the early twentieth century. Such images show how a fashionable evening look was presented to the public in the years around 1915.
