Rather than a single scene, this etching is a sheet of assorted figures, as its Italian title, *Varie figure*, announces. Jacques Callot, born in Nancy in the Duchy of Lorraine, spent much of his career in Florence under Medici patronage, and he signed the plate with the Latin *fecit*, "made it." The record dates the sheet to roughly 1617 to 1621, when Callot was producing small, crowded etchings of everyday street life. Its market subject links it to the busy trade he recorded so closely. His fine, controlled line keeps each figure distinct even at a small scale.
