Few photographs from the Ottoman interior in these years show a town's religious life as plainly as this one of a mosque in Erzincan, a city in eastern Anatolia. The print comes from the Frank R. McCoy Collection, assembled by an American officer who served in the Near East during and after the First World War. Erzincan lay on the route between the Black Sea and the Armenian highlands, and by about 1918 the region had been battered by years of war, famine and upheaval. Images like this one record the built fabric of towns that were soon to be transformed or lost.
