The plaster niches inside the Yesil Cami in Bursa are the subject here, rather than the mosque's better-known tilework or exterior. The Green Mosque was completed in the 1420s under Sultan Mehmed I, and its richly decorated interior made it one of the most admired religious buildings of the early Ottoman capital. The print comes from an album by Abdullah Frères, an Istanbul studio with ties to the Ottoman court, and it is part of the collection associated with Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909. Its captions in Ottoman Turkish and French show how photographers of the period documented historic monuments for a wide audience.
