In this c1898 print, a cat takes the place of a suspect, posed as if it were being booked for a police rogues' gallery. The joke depends on a routine that many viewers would have recognized. By the 1880s and 1890s, departments in cities such as New York had assembled collections of criminal portraits to help identify repeat offenders. The photographer turns that serious practice into a parlor-room gag, with a camera in the scene and an animal playing the part of the criminal. Humorous pictures of animals in human roles were a popular genre around 1900.
