*Patience in a punt* is a 1792 stipple engraving by W. Dickinson, made after a drawing by Henry William Bunbury, and its title points to the joke: a man sitting still in a small flat-bottomed boat, waiting for a bite that may never come. Bunbury was a well-known English caricaturist whose comic drawings of everyday pleasures and foibles were widely reproduced in the late eighteenth century. Stipple engraving, which builds tone from dots rather than lines, gave such prints a soft, painterly finish. The record files the print under cartoons, boats and fishing.
