Generals Nelson Miles, William Shafter and Joseph Wheeler appear here on horseback, with three other riders, in a scene the caption links to a meeting with Spanish commander Jose Toral. That meeting led to the surrender of Santiago de Cuba in July 1898, which ended the land campaign around the city during the Spanish-American War. The caption is marked as unverified, so the exact occasion and the identities of the other riders should be treated with caution. The print was copyrighted by William Dinwiddie, a photographer whose wartime views circulated widely at the time.
