Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch director-general, surrendered New Amsterdam to an English fleet under Richard Nicolls on September 8, 1664. The English had arrived in August with warships and a demand for surrender. Stuyvesant wanted to resist, but the town's residents pressed him to yield without a fight. The city was renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York, and the handover ended Dutch rule on Manhattan. This color halftone reproduces an painting by H.A. Ogden, and its date is unrecorded, so it reflects a later artist's view of the scene rather than an eyewitness account.
