Here the subject is a book cover rather than a landscape: the cover of an Urdu edition of Jack Schaefer's Western novel *Shane*, marked by an antlered deer. Schaefer's story, first published in 1949, follows a gunfighter who drifts into a homesteading valley and became one of the most widely read American Westerns, later adapted into George Stevens's 1953 film. Seeing it issued in Urdu shows how far American frontier fiction traveled beyond its home readership. No date is recorded for this print.
