Taste a-la-Mode" is a satirical engraving whose title carries two dates, 1745 and 1790, but the caption card records no date, so its exact origin is uncertain. F. Patton engraved it after a drawing by Boitard, and the card's tags of cartoons and clothing and dress suggest a place in the tradition of British fashion satire. Printmakers in eighteenth-century London often lampooned the latest styles and the people who chased them, turning clothing into pointed social commentary. Prints like this one were sold to a public that enjoyed both the humor and the gossip about fashion.
