A group of men from the village of Korobovo, in Russia's Volga River region, gathers for the camera in this small print, mounted in an album and dated to about 1910. The named village is what distinguishes it from the many peasant portraits of the period, since it ties the image to one specific community rather than to a general type. Peasants made up the great majority of Russia's population at that time, and in the years before the First World War photographers and ethnographers became increasingly interested in recording rural life. Small album prints like this one were often kept as keepsakes or as records of a particular place, so the faces, clothing and posture are worth studying for clues about everyday village life.
