This small print, measuring just 8 by 8 centimeters and mounted in an album around 1910, records a wonder-working icon of the Feodorov Mother of God in the Dormition Cathedral in Kostroma. Icons of this kind were often covered with a decorative metal case, or riza, that left only the faces and hands of the figures visible, and the subject headings point to that metalwork as a notable feature. Kostroma, on the Volga, was closely tied to the Romanov dynasty, whose founder was chosen tsar in 1613, and its icons drew pilgrims throughout the imperial period.
