Atotarho appears here as a legendary Onondaga leader, a figure Haudenosaunee tradition remembers as feared and powerful before the Great Law of Peace united the Five Nations. Henry Rowe Schoolcraft presented him as the first ruler of the Iroquois, a claim that reflects the oral sources Schoolcraft drew on more than a settled historical record. The picture is a lithograph made from a drawing by Seth Eastman, an army officer and painter whose many illustrations for Schoolcraft's *History of the Indian Tribes of the United States* shaped how nineteenth-century readers pictured Native people.
