Spear fishing on the shore of Walker Lake in western Nevada is the subsistence activity this picture records, a practice that once fed Northern Paiute people, identified here as Paviotso. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1924 as part of his long effort to document Native American life, and it was published in the supplement volume of *The North American Indian*, plate 534. Curtis often posed subjects and arranged props, so the scene reflects his picture of traditional life as much as everyday routine. Walker Lake is a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan, which helps explain why its shores supported communities for so long.
