This engraving reproduces a scene of a charioteer receiving a triumphal crown, a moment of victory in a race, taken from the Northern Frieze of the Parthenon in Athens. The frieze was carved in the fifth century BCE, during the building of the temple on the Acropolis under Pericles, and it wraps around the upper walls of the cella. Because the original marbles were removed to London in the early 1800s, engravings like this one were among the main ways European and American viewers came to know the sculpture. The record does not give a date for the print, so its exact age is uncertain.
