This portrait pairs Emperor Gojong, who ruled the Korean Empire from its proclamation in 1897, with his heir, the crown prince identified on the card as Yi Wang and better known as Yi Cheok, who would later reign as Emperor Sunjong. The card's rough date of about 1907 places the image in a turbulent year, when Japan's growing control over Korea pushed Gojong to abdicate in favor of his son that summer. The photograph is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures from the early 1900s, so it likely served as a record of a politically charged moment rather than a formal family portrait. Because the caption information is unverified, the exact occasion and sitting date remain uncertain.
