An engraving of Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) with a condom is a rare subject even among the racy images of its era. It appeared in volume four of the 1872 French edition of his *Mémoires*, one of many illustrated editions that kept the Venetian adventurer's account of his love affairs in circulation. Casanova wrote the memoirs in the 1790s, late in life, while working as a librarian at a castle in Bohemia, and the complete text did not appear until long after his death. Illustrations like this one helped sell such volumes, so the engraving reflects late nineteenth-century taste as much as eighteenth-century life.
