This exterior view shows La Grange, the château in Seine-et-Marne, southeast of Paris, that was the country seat of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French nobleman who fought beside American forces in the Revolutionary War. The record does not give a date for the photograph, so its age is uncertain, but it was reproduced in the Library of Congress Quarterly Journal in April 1972, which suggests it was chosen to illustrate the building's connection to Lafayette. Its catalog tracing places it under French castles and palaces, so the picture is best read as a record of a French country house tied to an American story.
