Mrs. Murray's strategy refers to a Revolutionary War story from September 1776, when New York was under British threat. According to a widely repeated legend, Mary Murray entertained British officers at her house on Murray Hill with food and wine and kept them occupied while American troops under Israel Putnam withdrew from Manhattan. This color halftone reproduces a painting by E. Percy Moran, issued around 1908 by the Gerlach-Barklow Company of Joliet, Illinois, which printed many patriotic scenes of this kind. Historians have questioned parts of the tale, so it is best read as popular patriotic history.
