Families meeting at the Salinas rodeo grounds in March 1942 show a place where livestock stalls and fairground buildings had been converted into temporary housing. Following Executive Order 9066, signed that February, people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast were ordered from their homes and held at assembly centers like this one before being moved to longer-term camps farther inland. The War Relocation Authority, the federal agency that ran the program, documented daily life in these centers. Many evacuees had left farms and businesses behind on short notice, so a moment of contact between relatives or neighbors stands out in the record.
