Few circus posters place two men's portraits above the show's name, but this one pairs likenesses of P.T. Barnum and J.A. Bailey under the banner of The Greatest Show on Earth. Barnum had died in 1891, so by 1897 his face served as a tribute to the founder of American showmanship, while Bailey was the partner who ran the touring organization. The color lithograph was printed by Strobridge & Co., a Cincinnati firm that produced many circus posters of the period, and its crowded, bold style was meant to draw audiences to the big tent.
