Few centennial keepsakes packed as many names onto one sheet as this lithograph, which pairs portraits of the Declaration's signers with their handwritten autographs. Printed around 1876, the year of the nation's hundredth anniversary, it reflects the wave of interest in the founding generation that swept American print culture as the country looked back on 1776. Many of the likenesses were drawn from earlier paintings and engravings rather than from life, so the faces show how the era imagined its founders. The autographs, meanwhile, offered viewers a direct link to the men who put their names to the document.
