A carver working with ivory on Nunivak Island, off the coast of western Alaska, is the focus of this Edward S. Curtis photograph, dated to about 1929. Curtis made the image for *The North American Indian*, where it appears in volume 20, page 86. Ivory carving was a long-established craft among the Yup'ik and related peoples of the Bering Sea coast, who shaped tusks and bone into tools, figurines and ornaments for both daily use and trade. The fur garments listed among the subjects reflect the clothing these communities made to withstand a harsh northern climate.
