Harper's Ferry sits where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, and in 1854 it was a town built around a federal armory and arsenal. This wood engraving, cut by R. Miller from a drawing by C. Minton, ran in the July 29, 1854 issue of *Gleason's Pictorial*, a Boston illustrated weekly. Views like this gave readers who had never traveled to Virginia a picture of the river gap and the town's industrial setting. Five years later, John Brown's raid on the federal armory would make the place far better known.
