This portrait shows Richard Maurice Bucke, a Canadian physician who ran the asylum for the insane in London, Ontario, and who is remembered today as one of Walt Whitman's closest friends. The caption card gives no date for the sitting, and its cataloging tags point to an office setting, which suits a man whose work centered on asylum administration and the study of the mind. Bucke's 1901 book *Cosmic Consciousness*, a study of mystical and heightened states of awareness, brought him wider attention beyond medicine. The print is credited to a photographer named Elliott, but the studio and the year remain unconfirmed.
