Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962) was a Croatian sculptor whose monumental figures and religious works made him one of the best-known artists of the early twentieth century in Central and Southeastern Europe. This portrait shows him as a man of his era rather than as a figure in any specific work, and the caption card offers no date or photographer, so its exact moment is uncertain. Meštrović spent much of his career moving between Zagreb, Vienna, Paris and, after 1947, the United States, where he taught and continued to carve and model until his death. Portraits like this one often served to introduce a sculptor to patrons, critics and exhibition audiences abroad.
