This 1929 portrait shows Patrick J. Hurley, the Oklahoma lawyer whom President Herbert Hoover named Secretary of War that spring, so the photograph dates from about eight months into his tenure. It was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that supplied newspapers and magazines with portraits and news photographs in the early twentieth century. Hurley later served as U.S. ambassador to China during World War II, a role that followed his earlier government service. The record's details come from a caption card and have not been independently verified, so the exact circumstances of the sitting are unknown.
