Set on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, this 1891 print shows a government beef issue, when cattle were distributed to Teton Lakota people who relied on rations after the buffalo herds had largely been destroyed. By the early 1890s, these issues were a central part of reservation life, keeping families fed while federal agents pressed for changes in how people lived and farmed. The photograph is part of the John C.H. Grabill collection, and Grabill, a photographer working in the Dakotas at the time, recorded many scenes from this period that help show its daily realities.
