Few pictures show the beef issue at Pine Ridge as plainly as this one, with men working over a carcass on the open plains beside a wagon. The record identifies the people as Teton Lakota, and the reservation's beef rations were supplied by the federal government under agreements tied to the loss of land and hunting grounds. John C. H. Grabill, a photographer working in the Dakotas, made the image in 1891, a year of growing tension at Pine Ridge. Worth noticing are the carts, the butchering work, and what the scene shows about how reservation rations shaped daily food supply.
