Set in the Black Hills of South Dakota, this 1888 view shows the road linking Deadwood with Sturgis, two mining-era towns that grew up after gold was discovered in the region in the 1870s. Roads and streams are the subjects named in the record, so the image likely shows a rural route beside water, a common sight in a landscape that supplied timber and mining traffic. John C. H. Grabill, the photographer whose collection holds the print, documented Dakota Territory scenery in these years. The print was submitted as a copyright deposit, which is one reason so many of these landscapes survive today.
