The subject here is a rustic well bucket, the object that gave its name to one of the most popular sentimental songs of the nineteenth century. Samuel Woodworth's poem, published in 1817, recalls a boyhood well and the cool water drawn from it, and it was later set to music and sung widely in American parlors and at public gatherings. This print reproduces a painting after Jerome Thompson, an American artist known for scenes of rural and domestic life, so the image turns that nostalgia into a picture of home. The print's date is not recorded, so its production history remains uncertain.
