Thomas Nast drew this wood engraving for the March 13, 1880, issue of *Harper's Weekly*, and its title, a plea to "give the natives a chance," is addressed to Carl Schurz, who was Secretary of the Interior under President Hayes. The record's subject tags point to Indians and voting, which places the cartoon in the debates of an election year over who counted as a citizen and voter. Nast was the magazine's leading political cartoonist, and his pointed captions were meant to steer readers toward a position as much as to amuse them.
