The sitter is Gustave Doré, the French illustrator and engraver whose dramatic book illustrations made him one of the most widely reproduced artists of the nineteenth century. The portrait appeared in the *Galerie Contemporaine*, a French series of portraits of notable living figures issued in the 1870s and 1880s. The record suggests the photograph may be by Nadar, the Paris photographer, and the wood engraving may follow a drawing by Doré, but these attributions are unconfirmed. Doré's illustrations for the Bible, Dante, and Cervantes remain the work most readers still associate with his name.
