Denis Diderot, the French philosopher who lived from 1713 to 1784, is the sitter here, though the card gives no date for the print itself. Because Diderot died decades before photography was invented, this photographic print most likely reproduces an earlier painting or engraving of him. As chief editor of the *Encyclopédie*, whose first volume appeared in Paris in 1751, he worked to gather and publish knowledge of science, crafts and the mechanical arts, making him a central figure of the French Enlightenment.
