Few portraits of the philosopher Jeremy Bentham survive in print form, and this engraving by S. Freeman reproduces a painting by Worthington. The caption card gives no firm date, though the title's span of 1784 to 1832 ends in the year Bentham died. Bentham spent much of his life arguing that laws and institutions should aim at "the greatest happiness of the greatest number," the founding idea of utilitarianism. His 1791 proposal for the Panopticon, a prison designed so inmates could always be observed, is among his best-known schemes.
