The sitter is the painter himself, shown in a reproduction of a self-portrait dated 1550, when Lucas Cranach the Elder was in his late seventies. He spent most of his career at the court of the Saxon electors in Wittenberg, where his workshop produced altarpieces, portraits and mythological scenes, and he was a close associate of Martin Luther. The record's details come from an unverified caption card, so the date and attribution are worth checking against the catalog before relying on them.
