Few sitters of the 1880s drew as much public attention as Oscar Wilde, and this albumen print on a card mount shows him as the New York photographer Napoleon Sarony recorded him around 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States lecturing on aestheticism. The card bears Sarony's copyright notice, a reminder that studio portraits of well-known figures were sold widely in the period and that the photographer helped shape how the public saw the sitter. Wilde, then in his late twenties, cultivated a deliberately theatrical image, and portraits like this one helped make his face a recognizable emblem of the Aesthetic movement.
