Shearing a flock by hand was slow, tiring work, and this stereograph records a more mechanized method in use at Kirkland, Illinois, where sheep are clipped with power-driven shears. Flexible-shaft clippers driven by a gasoline engine or line shaft had been spreading through American sheep country since the late 1800s, cutting the time and labor needed for each animal. Keystone View Company issued this stereo card around 1917, when paired images like this one were viewed through a hand stereoscope to give a sense of depth. The caption data is marked as unverified, so the exact farm and operator are not confirmed here.
