Ada Rehan, the Irish-born actress shown here, was one of the leading stars of the American stage in the late nineteenth century, and this c1897 portrait comes from the period when she was at the height of her fame. She was best known for her work with Augustin Daly's company in New York, where she played Shakespearean heroines and comedic roles, especially Katharine in *The Taming of the Shrew* and Julia in *The Two Gentlemen of Verona*. The photoprint was issued by Aimé Dupont, a New York City photographer who produced many studio portraits of performers for sale to theatergoers and the press. Note that the record's details come from an unverified caption card, so the exact date and publication context should be treated with some caution.
