Benjamin Ide Wheeler, the classicist who served as president of the University of California from 1899 to 1919, is the subject of this portrait, which carries a c1899 date on its caption card. The print was issued by George L. Wilcox of Berkeley, a photographer working in the university town during the years Wheeler took office. Because the record notes that its data comes from the caption card and has not been verified, the exact date should be read as approximate. Portraits like this one were widely sold as cabinet-style prints, so they reached students, faculty and admirers across the state.
