Monks at their desks, one reading and another writing, appear in this 1965 reproduction of an engraving that originally served as an advertisement in an edition of William of Ockham's *Dialogus*, a work by the fourteenth-century Franciscan philosopher. The record gives the advertisement's date as 1494 with a question mark, so the original may come from the early years of printing, when presses were spreading across Europe and displacing hand-copied manuscripts. The choice of a scriptorium scene to promote printed books is worth noticing, since it shows the older craft of copying set against the new trade. Graham Pollard's 1965 study of how books were distributed by catalog reproduces the image.
