A young male nude holds a lyre, the classical instrument linked to Apollo and Greek song, which places this ca. 1907 study within the tradition of figure photography that borrowed poses and props from ancient sculpture. The print is a platinum image with a gum overlay, a process favored by pictorialist photographers of the period for its soft tonal range and brushed, painterly surface. Such studies were usually staged as artistic figure work rather than portraits, so the sitter's identity is unrecorded and the photographer's aims are worth considering when viewing it.
