A young student working as a laboratory assistant is the focus here, a kind of job the National Youth Administration made possible for many students during the Depression. Created in 1935 as part of the New Deal, the NYA paid part-time wages to students so they could stay in high school and college rather than drop out to find work. Its campus jobs placed young people in science labs, libraries and workshops, and this picture, dated between 1936 and 1940, shows that program in action. It comes from the Office of War Information collection, whose photographs document many aspects of American life in those years.
