The Orient quad is a four-wheeled cycle, or quadricycle, built to carry more than one rider at a time, when most riders still went out alone on a two-wheeled bicycle. Orient was a bicycle brand from Massachusetts, and the machine reflects the late 1890s cycling boom, when makers experimented with new designs for pairs and small groups. The print was made by George H. Van Norman of Springfield, Massachusetts, a photographer who documented local cyclists and their machines, so it records both a product and the leisure culture that grew up around it.
