Eight soldiers posed together with their bicycles at Fort Francis E. Warren, the army post on the edge of Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1939. The fort had been renamed in 1930 for Francis E. Warren, the long-serving U.S. senator from Wyoming, and by the late 1930s it was a working garrison where horses and motor vehicles shared space with cheaper, quieter bicycles for errands and patrols around the post. The picture offers a plain look at everyday peacetime routine just before the United States entered a much larger mobilization.
