Columbia was the bicycle brand of the Pope Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut, and by 1895 its name stood for the bicycle boom that swept the United States in the 1890s. This lithograph was a commercial advertisement, the kind of colorful poster that bicycle makers used to sell safety bicycles to a wide public, including women, who took up cycling in growing numbers. The Library of Congress holds it among its prints, and it offers a useful look at how manufacturers marketed the new machine as healthy, modern, and within reach of ordinary buyers.
