A woman in a cycling costume stands beside her bicycle in this lithograph, which was designed as a two-piece package enclosure for the Pope Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut, makers of Columbia bicycles. Printed by the Gast Lithograph Company of New York around 1895, it belongs to the height of the American bicycle boom, when women's cycling attire sparked public debate over skirts, bloomers and respectable dress. Pope was one of the largest bicycle makers in the country, and pictures like this one helped tie the Columbia name to the freedom the machine seemed to offer.
