A cheerful caption, "We are having a heavenly time," sets the tone of this chromolithograph advertising the Columbia bicycle, made by the Pope Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Pope was one of the largest bicycle makers during the 1890s boom, and its Columbia brand was promoted through color posters like this one. The print was made by the lithographer C.M. Coolidge, whose bright, idealized scenes of outdoor leisure helped present cycling as a healthy and fashionable pastime. The date is only an estimate, so the print most likely dates from the 1890s.
