Few images in the Darktown series tie so closely to the fashions of their day as this hand-colored lithograph, whose title jokes that a Black bicycle club has been "knocked out" in a tumble. Currier & Ives issued the Darktown comics during the 1880s and 1890s, and they relied on minstrel-show stereotypes to portray African Americans as objects of ridicule rather than as ordinary city residents. The bicycle craze of the 1890s, when cycling clubs were spreading across American cities, gave the publisher a ready target for this kind of humor. Today the print is worth studying as evidence of how popular prints used a new pastime to advance racist caricature.
