Few images of the mid-1890s bicycle craze capture the sport as directly as this stereograph of a tournament held in Brooklyn. Issued by the American Stereoscopic Company of New York around 1896, the card holds a pair of nearly identical photographs that, seen through a hand viewer, merged into one image with apparent depth. By that decade the safety bicycle had replaced the high-wheeler, and racing meets like this drew crowds eager to watch riders compete. The copyright notice credits Edw. Clarke, and cards like this were sold as commercial souvenirs of popular entertainments.
